A quick story in honor of my fifth anniversary in New York City last week. Maybe this story is only amusing to those who know me, but when I accepted the job that took me to NYC, it was a few months after I had graduated from college, but we need to back up a little first. The weekend before I graduated, I got a late night call from my mom as I was leaving the library rehearsing for my capstone presentation. She had fallen carrying a few boxes and broke her nose. She had reconstructive surgeries that summer to get her nose back into shape, and one of those happened to be the weekend I’d need to move to NYC. Ever resourceful, our solution was to rent a Uhaul truck and enlist my best friend to drive it from Richmond to New York. In retrospect, I can’t believe that anyone agreed to this, but a few days later, Blair and I were on our way to my new abode on the Upper East Side. We survived generally unscathed, with the exception of side-swiping a Hampton Jitney and several wrong turns and blocked roads due to a visit from President Obama. Every time I ride through the Lincoln Tunnel, I think about that trip and laugh knowing the journey that brought me to my city.

I read a quote once from Leandra Medine, and I can’t find it today despite my best Googling, but in short, it said something to the effect that New York is the only city in the world that chooses who lives there, so those to make it longer than a few years should consider themselves the luckiest people in the world. I’m feeling especially to be a chosen one and celebrate half way to being a “real New Yorker.”

Hi strangers. Remember us? It’s been a busy summer for both of us. We both moved: me to the Upper East Side and Lindsey, back to Northern Virginia. I took a long vacation and traveled through Paris and London. I’ll let Lindsey update you on how she’s been filling her days, but needless to say, we’ve both had our hands full.

Anyways, here are a few things I’ve been loving lately, enjoy! xx

  1. Faceted Mirror: I had been looking for the perfect mirror to hang above my bed for a few weeks. It’s been the last thing on my list to feel like my apartment was really finished. I’ve been here for 4 months now, and generally I’m someone who moves in completely almost immediately. I’ve had things anchored in the walls for months and once I saw this gorgeous mirror, I knew it was the one.
  2. Slip Silk Pillowcases: I’ve been a long time lover of silk pillowcases, these ones from Slip are uber chic and offer more colors than the usual suspects.
  3. Pave Link Bracelet: A bit of a basic bitch purchase, but I picked this up to stack among a few other bracelets for a wedding a few weeks ago and haven’t taken it off since. It’s so versatile and easy to wear, why would I ever not wear it?
  4. Zara Gingham Top: Something that I’m quick to admit but have no plans to make changes is the fact I have the least flattering taste. For my body atleast. I love oversized things, things that are ill fitting, drapey, fashioney and are generally not great looking on people bigger than a size two. This is a prime example and also my favorite top of the moment. Sorry y’all.
  5. alo Leggings: A few months ago, I rejoined Classpass and rediscovered my love of barre. It’s basically the only class I take and jump around from studio to studio so that I can use all of my classes on it. Part of the barre game is fashion, especially when you’re practicing at studios in Manhattan. I recently discovered the brand alo at Nordstrom and I’m super loving their fun leggings.
  6. Steve Madden ‘Imala’These shoes are magic. I’ve owned them since August and have worn them nearly every day. I get compliments on them from all types of people in my life, with all different tastes and styles. These shoes transcend them all.
  7. Rifle Paper Co. Notebooks: I’ve been trying to get back in the habit of journaling and these precious notebooks are so motivating.

coachella style - LGi’m not one to back away from a challenge, so here you go blog world, here’s my coachella packing list! unlike suz, this is my first trip west for the most instagram-able music festival of the year and to be honest, i’m not sure what to expect. the only vision i’ve had in my head has been vanessa hudgens, queen of coachella, and that’s just not the route i’m trying to take haha.

i didn’t want to spend a lot of money on themed pieces that i wouldn’t wear again so my game plan was to exaggerate my every day style with fun accessories. i incorporated favorites out of my wardrobe (like the Free People Austin Dress — i own it in 2 colors) and added things that would work with the festival vibe & warm weather: like these gladiator sandals (who am i?!) and this floppy hat (my new favorite item!).

one thing suz and i do agree on though? converse sneakers are the best way to jam out.

shop everything in my suitcase below!

coachella style

It’s just about that time of year again, time for my annual pilgrimage to Palm Springs for Coachella. At the risk of sounding super basic, it’s always one of my favorite weekends of the year. For those who don’t know, I am an East Coaster to the bone, but a few days in the California sun always does me well.

As for packing, I always make a few purchases before heading west. My wardrobe tends to be pretty typical New York, lots of black, dresses and airing on the side of formal. I always struggle to find the balance of my typical structure, ultra feminine style and festival street-style. Here’s a peak into my packing list thus far. Lindsey, I’m challenging you to show off what’s inside your suitcase for our trip next month.
